It was the band’s only full-length record and it had been a success. But his Hilton house band colleagues were a bit tied up recording cassettes with different vocalists. Still Mergia, amidst recording and gigs with the Walias, was also eager to make another recording of his instrumental-focused arrangements. So he went to the nearby Ghion Hotel, another upmarket outpost with a popular nightclub. Dahlak Band was the house band at Ghion at the time. Together they made this tape Wede Harer Guzo right there in the club during the band’s afternoon rehearsal meetings, with sessions lasting three days.\u003cbr\u003e“My instrumental music was very in-demand and I could have waited,” Mergia recalls. “But I wanted to have a\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003edifferent kind of sound. I had done several recordings with Walias so this time I needed a different sound.”\u003cbr\u003eDahlak Band catered to a slightly more youthful, local audiences, while Mergia’s main gig with the Walias at Addis swankiest hotel had a mixed audience that included foreign diplomats and older folks from abroad. Therefore their sets varied included lighter fare during dinnertime and a less rollicking selection of jazz and r\u0026amp;b. Meanwhile Dahlak was known more for the mainly soul and Amharic jams they served up for hours two nights a week to a younger crowd.\u003cbr\u003eWhen Mergia entered the Ghion hotel nightclub to record this tape he was teaming up with a seasoned band who were particularly suited to his instrumental sound. Ethiopian popular music at the time combined elements of music from abroad and Dahlak balanced Mergia’s traditional song selection with the modern approach of a seasoned soul band.\u003cbr\u003eCrucial to the resulting collaboration were Mergia’s arrangements which replaced distinctively use vocals for melodies normally played by instruments. His arrangements conjured memorable new flavors out of existing songs already popular with listeners.\u003cbr\u003eBefore Walias Band’s successful gig as house band at the Hilton, Mergia was a young musician hustling from one place to another around Addis. After finishing gigs at the Hilton or on nights off, he would go to good bar where azmari—roving musicians who play traditional songs for tips—and he’d pick up ideas and inspiration. Late night azmari performances revealed for Mergia which songs were moving people in the city. He regularly attended clubs, bars and special private after-hours venues called zigubgn where azmari perform. For Mergia, it was crucial to feature songs he knew people would recognize.\u003cbr\u003eAmharic music has a large repertoire of standard songs everyone knows, the original composers and lyricists of which are often unknown or forgotten. Many of the songs Dahlak, Walias and other bands of that era (including Ibex and Shebele) were playing came from the treasury of shared music, which helped ensure a good vibe in the air.\u003cbr\u003eMergia released Wede Harer Guzo (“Travel to Harer,”with Sheba Music Shop, which was located in the Piazza district but has long since shut down. Dark yet danceable, and with a heavy dose of goth ethos, their music is reminiscent of the masters that predate them, but make no mistake: Molchat Doma creates a sound and meaning that is immediately recognizable as all their own. From what little I can gather from my own research, Magical Power Mako is a trio with a reputation as something like the Yo-Yo Ma of experimental Japanese rock, and this album is a legendary touchstone of the scene, released during the ’70s. Given that I have no prior knowledge or appreciation of Japanese psychedelia -– and there’s no possible way to fake it –- I’m simply going to write this review purely from the perspective of an unknowing pop music critic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eFortunately, that doesn’t immediately doom\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eSuper Record\u003c\/i\u003e. Even with its experimental, completely unconventional nature, the album still boils down to something inherently listenable and enjoyable. The sound starts from a template of basic Japanese folk, and then proceeds to wildly pilfer from every Asian influence one can imagine — there are Indian sitars, Turkish mandolins, and a distinctly Silk Road-ish sound (showcased most prominently on the song “Silk Road”). Add danceable rock rhythms, layer on a heavy dose of swirling psychedelic effects, and\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eSuper Record\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eproduces a lush, dense, relentlessly creative sound.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eLike all good experimental rock albums, each track is designed to be appreciated at an intellectual level, evoking its own particular mental landscape. The range of sound is breathtaking: the group begins with the hard bass trance of “Andromeda”, but easily swings to a bleak,\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eKid A\u003c\/i\u003e-esque “Tundra”, pastoral rhythms on “Woman in South Island”, and a martial beat on “Majorica Resistance Song”. What’s even better is the off-kilter creativity of the whole thing: its Asian motifs present an especially refreshing break from the same chord progressions that Western rock has milked to death.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-skm-boomerang-el-0=\"processed\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBut while the sounds explored never fail to be cerebrally fascinating, they’re not always as effective as actual, standalone songs. The consequence of such creative exploration is a tendency to meander: guitar lines play themselves off into nowhere, the melody occasionally breaks down, and one ridiculously annoying psychedelic sequence (“Song 3”) is repeated far too many times.
